Demand for business process management software is set to be bigger in the auto industry than in other industrial sectors, according to a German poll.

The survey, carried out by Software Initiative Germany (SID), an industry group, and software maker Metasonic, polled 100 managers and experts in German industry. Of this group, 81 pc projected the biggest demand for BPM software to come from the  car industry. Banks were second and utilities came in third.

The executives polled said the main reason for introducing BPM systems was the need to get better insight into business processes, achieve cost savings, avoid mistakes and be able to respond faster. Many also cited the need to better manage business and IT systems.

SID said the expected high demand for BPM systems in the car industry reflects first and foremost a desire to reduce costs. “The financial crisis has made the auto industry in particular realize that business processes need to be improved to reduce costs,” said Herbert Kindermann, chairman of the the SID discussion group “Quo vadis BPM.”

SID cited budget constraints as the main reason that only 23 pc of German companies have a BPM solution in place. That contrasts sharply with the perceived need for such a system in these companies. In the poll, 90 pc of executives questioned said they considered IT-supported business processes important or even very important, while 82 pc said they saw business process management as a competitive advantage.
